MOBO STUDIO: ACTIVATE!
Fall 2009 marked the launch of Q2L's afterschool program, Mobo Studio, an enrichment space designed to activate kids' curiosity about creativity, design, and mobile technologies. Mobo Studio utilizes a project-based, studio-like learning environment to inspire kids to explore new topics and hone new skills. With a focus on digital citizenship, design expertise and community engagement, Mobo Studio extends Q2L's focus on tinkering, problem-solving, designing, and inventing.
Developed and administered by the Institute of Play, Mobo Studio involved 23 students, six teachers and met four days a week at Quest to Learn. Four differently-themed workshops or "pods" were offered: Comics, Character and Creativity, Mobile Fashion, Generating Buzz, and Super Sleuths. The Institute of Play collaborated with an amazing group of partners to present Mobo Studio: the Mobile Learning Institute and the Pearson Foundation, generously provided funding, mobile phones and laptops; Mark Ecko's Sweat Equity Enterprises provided their design experts and expertise and the Education Development Center provided researchers, game consoles and a sneak peek of their new video game, Super Sleuths. In December, Super Art + Design Challenge Wednesdays was presented in collaboration with the Eyebeam Art and Technology Center. Mobo Studio was fueled by a dedicated and talented group of teacher-experts who tirelessly worked to engage the energetic and knowledge-hungry Q2L students in everything from soft circuits, playtesting games, and graphic novels to 2-D animation and the iterative design process.
